Archive for August, 2009

THANK YOU for the overwhelming response to this offer.  The program ended October 1, 2009.

We updated this post with the SIGG Bottle Return FAQs.

We feel obligated to report that the SIGG company, a manufacturer of water bottles we previously sold, recently announced that their bottles produced before August 2008 contained Bisphenol-A (BPA) in the lining.  A SIGG statement maintains that “The bottles were thoroughly and regularly tested in both the USA and Switzerland and all tests revealed absolutely no migration or leaching of BPA or any other substance from the protective inner liner.”

While this assertion may or may not be true, we remain frustrated that many of our customers bought SIGG bottles expecting them to be BPA free.

To satisfy our customers and our own desire to see the world populated with truly BPA free items, we are offering a SIGG Bottle Replacement Program.  If you would like to participate, here’s how:

1) Send your bottle back to us at Baying Hound Ltd. 349 Tibet Rd Columbus OH 43202.  We recommend shipping with US parcel post or first class mail.  Include a note with your email address.  We will accept packages postmarked October 1 and earlier.

2) We will email you a discount code for 40% off a Klean Kanteen, Blue Q, Earthlust, Nathan Sports, Thinksport or Guyot Designs bottle as a replacement.

3) All SIGG bottles collected will be recycled or returned to the SIGG corporation.

When I see a display like this in a big box store:

cheap bottles

$9 for a 700 mL bottle?

I am reminded why we sell Klean Kanteen, Nathan Sports, EarthLust, Blue Q and Thinksport bottles, not no-brand cheap things.  It’s because our bottles have:

*quality of materials ~ Our bottles are created from high quality (surgical grade) stainless steel.  Discount bottles? Usually aluminum of indeterminate quality, maybe with lining of indeterminate quality

*quality of manufacturing ~ Our bottles are made to strict specifications so the tops always fit and the sizing is consistent. A discount manufacturer approached us once and we asked for a sample bottle. It leaked, had rough edges around the sipping surface and was out of true.

*ethical manufacturing standards ~ All the manufacturers we carry regularly inspect their manufacturing facilities to ensure employees are paid fairly and treated well.  If a discount bottle manufacturer doesn’t share their manufacturing ethics, the logical conclusion is that they are cutting corners somewhere.

*customer service ~ Our manufacturers are established businesses making bottles for the right reason: to give consumers a safe durable drinking vessel.  If a customer ever has a complaint, the manufacturers replace the product and address the design flaw (if there was one) quickly.  Those other bottles sometimes do not even list a manufacturer to contact if and when you have a problem.

*profits shared with charity ~ We donate 1% of all sales to various charities through our 1% for Good program.  Purchases of Klean Kanteen and Earthlust bottles go one step further as they are members of 1% For the Planet.

Most good things in life cost more, as they have more benefits to people and the planet.

The start of school is around the corner for many families.  It means time to get back to packing lunches, after school activities, and a routine.  Even adults without kids return from vacation and re-establish routine.

Why not add in one eco-friendly step this autumn?  Here are six simple green changes you can try:

1) Walk or bike to school or work once a week.  You’ll love the endorphins, the environment will love the lack of gas pollution.

2) Convert your plastic bottled water habit to a water-from-home habit.  A stainless steel water bottle will save you money in the long run, eliminate waste, and give you BPA free beverages.  We recommend a 12 ounce klean kanteen with sports top or EarthLust 13 ounce bottle to fit in a children’s lunch box.

3) Pack your lunch once a week or more.  It’s easier to eat healthy local foods when you pack them yourself.  birdtote2

4) Use a reusable lunch bag like our totes from Blue Q and utensils like the microbites from Guyot Designs.  Save money and eliminate waste!

5) Enjoy your morning hot beverage in a reusable cup.  It’s easy to run through the drive through or stop at a coffee shop on the way to school or work, but those paper and styrofoam cups really add up in the landfill.  Bring your coffee or tea with you from home or ask your local barista to fill up your reusable mug.  Most will be happy to do so and some even offer a discount for bringing your own!

6) Don’t forget to do your back to school shopping with reusable bags.  We now sell beautiful b.b.begonia foldable lightweight totes that make switching to reusable bags easy.

If you want to save a little green, use coupon code ‘greenschool’ at www.BayingHound.com for a 10% discount until August 31!

Are any of you planning back to school changes to benefit your health and the environment?
